One message referenced a Bitcoin transaction, and prosecutors say he briefly called a family member to intensify the pressure.Investigators traced the digital communications to Callella’s California residence.

He allegedly admitted to following the case in the media and contacting the family to see if they would respond.He now faces two federal charges related to transmitting ransom communications.

Officials stress that his actions are separate from the primary abduction investigation.

Meanwhile, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate Nancy’s disappearance as a criminal abduction.

Evidence of forced entry and blood was found in her Tucson home. Authorities maintain hope that she is alive as the search continues.
