Japanese fortune teller Ryo Tatsuki has forecast a major disaster for July 5, causing public alarm. A former manga artist, she is known for prophetic dreams dating to the 1980s and previously gained notice for seemingly predicting the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
In her 1999 book, The Future I Saw, she describes the ocean “boiling” south of Japan. Many interpret this as a warning of an undersea volcanic eruption that could trigger a massive tsunami.
The predicted impact zone reportedly includes Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Northern Mariana Islands. This has sparked widespread concern across the region.
Tourism in Japan has already been affected, particularly in southern cities like Kagoshima and Kumamoto. Travel bookings have fallen by approximately 50%.
Hong Kong Airlines is reducing flights to these areas through July and August. Warnings from entities like the Chinese embassy about natural disasters have further heightened traveler anxiety.
However, officials are urging calm. Miyagi Governor Yoshihiro Murai has dismissed the prediction as unscientific and criticized the resulting panic.
He emphasizes that local residents are not evacuating and encourages tourists to continue visiting, affirming Japan remains a safe destination despite the unfounded fears.
