Found a Bug in Your Hair? How to Get Rid of It

Head lice are a common household nightmare—tiny, persistent insects that quickly turn a peaceful home into an itchy, uncomfortable environment. These pests often spread rapidly through schools via close contact or shared personal belongings.

Anyone who has dealt with lice knows it requires a time-consuming process of combing, treatments, and plenty of patience. These small, wingless creatures live on the scalp and feed on human blood.

Lice lay eggs called nits near the scalp, which can be extremely difficult to remove. While they don’t transmit disease, their presence causes intense itching and discomfort. They can survive off the scalp for up to 48 hours, making thorough cleaning essential.

To eliminate lice, begin with a medicated shampoo or lotion designed specifically for treatment. Follow all instructions carefully, ensuring the product is applied correctly and left on for the recommended time.

This step kills live lice but does not remove nits, which must be combed out separately. Use a fine-toothed nit comb on wet hair, working in small sections and wiping the comb after each pass.

Repeat treatments after seven to ten days to catch any newly hatched lice. Cleaning your home is equally crucial—wash clothing, bedding, and accessories in hot water. Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in plastic bags for two weeks.

Regularly check your child’s scalp and discourage sharing personal items to prevent future outbreaks. With diligence and consistency, these persistent pests can be eliminated, restoring peace and comfort to your household.
