Newly released documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein have revived allegations involving former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell. The files suggest a deeper relationship between the two than Mitchell previously acknowledged and reference an FBI probe into sex-trafficking claims connected to Epstein’s network. Mitchell has denied all allegations.
Mitchell once described Epstein as a “friend and supporter” and said he “organized a fundraiser for me once.” However, Justice Department releases and court records indicate the relationship continued for years after Epstein’s crimes became public. According to reports, the FBI investigated claims that one victim was told to engage in sexual activity with Mitchell, but the probe was later closed without explanation.
A DOJ memo cites testimony from Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who told investigators that Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell “directed her to have sex with” Mitchell. Agents showed her “photos of prominent men in Epstein’s orbit to help her identify” alleged perpetrators. Court testimony also confirmed Mitchell flew on Epstein’s plane and visited his residence, though no details of activities were provided.
Mitchell, now 92, has consistently denied the accusations in civil litigation and has not explained why he maintained contact with Epstein after the allegations became public. His inclusion in the files prompted his resignation from the Mitchell Institute. The documents do not establish criminal charges but have intensified public scrutiny of his past associations.
